USTDA Supports Deployment of Intelligent Transportation System for Traffic Management in China

April 12, 2013

(USTDA) GUANGZHOU, CHINA – Today, Director Leocadia I. Zak concluded a grant agreement with the Panyu District Government in Guangzhou that will support the completion of a feasibility study and pilot project for the deployment of an intelligent transportation system (ITS) for traffic management.

China's rapid economic development has led to substantial urban migration, resulting in severe traffic congestion and transportation inefficiencies. In an effort to effectively incorporate ITS to help ease congestion, the Chinese government has committed to accelerate the use of intelligent transportation solutions throughout China. The project includes an examination of the existing ITS network in the city's Panyu District, providing recommendations for upgrades, and an implementation plan and pilot demonstration to showcase U.S. technologies at six intersections.

The $494,000 grant was signed in Guangzhou by USTDA Director Leocadia I. Zak and by the Party Secretary of Panyu District, Mr. Lu Yi Xian.

"U.S. companies are leaders in intelligent transportation systems and for that reason I am proud USTDA is in a position to support U.S. industry's efforts to engage this growing market," USTDA Director Zak stated.

The project will be led by a team from W & S Solutions (Pleasanton, CA) and Econolite Control Projects (Anaheim, CA). In addition to contributing over $450,000 to complete the study and pilot project, the team brings a long and successful history of undertaking similar transportation modeling projects, as well as providing services, equipment and technologies critical to the successful deployment of ITS for traffic management.
