(USTDA) Will Support JSC Alatau Zharyk's Plan to Improve its Electricity Distribution Network

ALMATY, KAZAKHSTAN – The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) awarded a grant to the Kazakhstan electricity distribution company, JSC Alatau Zharyk (AZHK), to provide a feasibility study on a distribution automation project in the Almaty region. The grant was signed yesterday at AZHK's offices in Almaty by U.S. Consul General Michael G. Snowden on behalf of USTDA, and by AZHK Chairman of the Board Muhit Umbetov on behalf of AZHK.

The USTDA grant will allow JSC Alatau Zharyk to determine the economic, technical and financial feasibility of an electric power distribution automation smart grid project. By implementing a modern supervisory control and data acquisition system, an outage management system, distribution management systems and smart meters, the company will be able to improve efficiency, thereby reducing power generation needs.

This project is a priority for AZHK and the Government of Kazakhstan due to its potential for reducing power losses and improving electric power distribution efficiencies," said USTDA Regional Director Carl B. Kress. "We are pleased to support the utilization of smart grid technology to develop AZHK's electric power distribution network and to connect AZHK with U.S. expertise and solutions."

JSC Alatau Zharyk is a subsidiary of SamrukEnergo, the state-owned national electric power company, which is itself a subsidiary of the state-owned holding company Samruk-Kazyna. AZHK is the electric power distribution company for the Almaty region and, as such, is responsible for supplying electricity to more than 2.2 million customers over more than 35,000 kilometers of power lines.

The opportunity to conduct the USTDA-funded feasibility study will be competed on the Federal Business Opportunities (FBO) website. A link to the FBO announcement will be posted to USTDA's website at www.ustda.gov. Interested U.S. firms should submit proposals according to the instructions in the FBO announcement.
